On Traveling, Balance, and Doing my Work Well

Traveling for work always sounds glamorous on paper. In reality, it’s a mix of calendars, coordination, and making sure I don’t run myself ragged.
Richmond was one of those trips where everything had to line up just right. Travel days, lodging, work commitments, personal downtime, and client communication all packed into a short window. I have to travel pretty intentionally or else the balance disappears fast.
When I’m out of town, my priorities shift slightly. I plan more carefully, I pace myself, and I’m selective about how I spend my energy. That’s not just for me, it’s so that when I show up to work, I’m present, grounded, and enjoying what I’m doing.
Coordinating with clients while traveling requires clarity on both sides. Expectations, timing, and boundaries matter even more when I'm not at home. I’d rather have fewer, well-planned commitments than overbook and bring a half-version of myself to the table. It's a win win for everyone.

I also make space for myself while I’m away. Quiet walks. Sitting somewhere scenic. Being somewhere without needing anything from it, if that makes sense.
I just can't be “on” nonstop even if I wanted to be. I know when to engage and when to step back. When I do meet with clients on the road, I bring the same standards I do at home. Preparation, focus, and a good attitude. Being in a different city doesn’t change that, but it does add another layer to manage.
Richmond has been fun. I was able to settle into a rhythm quickly. That made it easier to balance work, rest, and everything in between.
